Styles of Leadership

Leaders often adopt a certain style with which they govern procedures and events; in conjunction with the dynamics of the group this process can be effective for some members or the group as a whole or have a negative effect. The style used may be determined by circumstance or by personal preference either consciously or unconsciously.

There are generally four different categories that leaders may utilise.

Authoritarian / Autocratic.

The leader often takes charge and gives orders, often it is the leader's decision that takes precedence and so ultimately responsibly is taken by them. They may be seen as great organisers and planners, they are able to work logically and are productively providing that the group responses favourably to their demands.

The Peacemaker.

This role is more seen in maintenance oriented people, less of an actual leadership style but rather a personality type that reacts to harmony within the group. This role can be both positive and negative depending upon circumstance, if tension needs to be eased this person may well act to defuse the situation, however they may not always welcome conflict and may even take disharmony within the group personally.

Laissez Faire.

This type of leader will often allow the more dominant persons within the group to take authority and will back most positive decisions. They are unlikely to initiate activity but will aid the process of a strong group by acting as a facilitator.

They may be seen to be uninvolved or non-directional, they are not dominant leaders but allow the group to work with their strengths.

Democratic.

This form of leadership is often adopted within a capable or focussed group. Decisions are made with the inclusion and input of all members. They are open and direct, freely giving opinions and receiving criticisms and encouraging others to do the same.

Problems are solved in the most logical manner with all group members being considered and consulted.

Ultimately the fairest and most productive form of leadership within a group allowing members to contribute according to their talents and offering support to those in need.
