CHM 101 - THE PERSONAL CONTEXT OF MINISTRY Chris Williams
Michaelmas & Lent terms

In this compulsory foundation module we will address the topic of Christian ministry in a broad context to enable you to demonstrate basic and fundamental knowledge of Christian calling, discipleship and practice. The aim is to enhance your understanding of Christian life, vision and practice. We will study some key primary sources, the Gospel of Mark, the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and some mediaeval and early modern spiritual writers. We will support this study with selected secondary sources and commentaries alongside recent popular works on ministry and practical discipleship, relevant behavioural science topics and self-evaluation and self-awareness instruments. During the course we expect to stimulate, challenge and support your study in theology, practical psychology, and personal awareness by developing your skills in communication, working together and solving problems related to the subject topics. Overall the module will begin to prepare you for future life and forms of service. It will help to prepare you to choose and determine the learning path of your course in Part II of the degree, and will help you to become an inquiring, reflective learner. You will learn correct academic conventions and how to present your ideas in group discussion.

Alongside this module you will be involved in a planned tutorial programme designed to support this learning. Also you will be supported in choosing and engaging in an on-going ministry experience in a practical context that will be integrated into the work of the module.

CHM 201 - WORKING RELATIONSHIPS & MINISTRY Chris Williams
Michaelmas & Lent terms

This module is designed to build on all you worked on in CHM101 and is the central course for the CM programme in year two. The focus here is on relationships, groups, family life and community. The course will help you develop your knowledge of the psychology of groups, the way we develop as social and relating beings and how the Christian tradition has unique insights into the problems we face in this development. The social and psychological ideas analysed in the light of the Bible and Christian thinking, is an important part of this course. Also you will be supported in developing the skills relevant to ministry such as effective communication, team and group development, working together, problem solving and effective support. The spiritual disciplines needed for working and living with others and the practice of discipleship and servanthood are also emphasised.

CHM 203 - MINISTRY EXPERIENCE (1) Rae Lister
Michaelmas & Lent terms

This module is designed to help you use and learn from your serial and block experience. It will also include consideration of how you learn in any work place situation, so part-time and voluntary work in a range of situations could be included. The focus is on helping you to understand and practice the skills of a reflective practitioner, someone who can use their own experience to understand, learn, evaluate and decide on how to improve their own practice in ministry. The models of effective ministry introduced in the course will be tested in practice and used to help you analyse what you do and why. The themes of self-awareness, how you take up roles, and how you work with others, are central to this module.

CHM 204 - GIVING CARE & COUNSEL Chris Williams
Michaelmas term

This module is designed to help you explore and become more proficient in the Christian work of caring, supporting, healing and encouragement. The way Christians have attempted to express the love of God to others, and how successful they have or have not been is a key theme. The context of contemporary modern and post-modern culture is taken into account and we will explore the new and developing needs we all have and the relevance of current Christian practice. Your competence in the key skills of effective listening will be evaluated and you will be introduced to training methods developed to enhance the interpersonal skills needed for this area of ministry.

CHM 206 (in Year 2) or CHM 306 (in Year 3) - INDEPENDENT STUDY (single module) A named tutor
Agreed dates in the year

This module is designed to give you the opportunity to explore an aspect of ministry or Christian life that is not covered in any depth elsewhere in the degree course. You will have the opportunity to spend time in researching relevant sources, thinking out the implications of your new understanding and exploring your ideas with a tutor assigned to you. The completed work will usually take the form of a 4,000 - 5,000 word dissertation. You will need to organise yourself in the term before you start this project to find out how viable it is. You should talk it over with your Professional and Academic Tutor (PAT) and/or a another tutor whom you both agree will be able to help you decide how to proceed.

CHM 301 - LEADERSHIP, GROWTH & CHANGE Chris Williams
Michaelmas & Lent terms

This module continues the work of CHM101 and CHM201 and acts as the central course for the CM degree in year 3. Here the focus is on the vision, planning, organising and leading of ministry. We will explore how the believing community, ekklesia or church expresses its corporate life in community and action. We will begin to be more conscious of how we work and organise ourselves as well as understanding what is needed for effective direction and planning. The contributions of theology and Biblical concepts, as well behavioural and management science will be explored, applied and critically analysed. The spiritual disciplines of corporate living and acting will also be an important theme.

CHM 302 - THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION & ADULT LEARNING Dr. Sheila Hunter
Michaelmas term or Lent term

The module will extend and develop some of the areas already encountered in CHM101 and CHM201. Its particular concern is adult learning, with special reference to the practice of Christian ministry. It complements the Care and Counsel module CHM204, undertaken in the second year. The module has a dual focus: the adult as learner and the Christian minister as facilitator of adult learning,

CHM 303 - MINISTRY EXPERIENCE (2) Rae Lister
Michaelmas & Lent terms

This Year Three module is designed to help you use and learn from your serial and block practical ministry experiences. It builds on the work of CHM203 and includes consideration of how you learn in any work place situation, so part time and voluntary work in a range of situations could be included. The focus is on helping you to understand and practice the skills of a reflective practitioner, that is, someone who can use their own experience to understand, learn, evaluate and decide on how to improve their own practice in ministry. The models of effective ministry introduced in the course will be tested in practice and used to help you analyse what you do and why. The themes of leadership, effective organisation and the ability to discern problems, issues and organisational difficulties, as well as taking initiative and promoting change, are central to this module.

CHM 305 - ACTION RESEARCH PROJECT (independent study) Chris Williams
Agreed dates during the year

This year three module is designed to introduce theory and practice related to managing change and evaluating the organising and delivery of ministry projects, or, the more personal development of skills, roles and confidence in a ministry related activity. You will be introduced to a range of ways of doing action research and will be supported in developing the skills to use them. You will be supported in deciding on an area of enquiry and to plan and execute your research. The assessed work will be a report on how you decided to focus the work, what you did, what was revealed and how well you managed the whole process.

CHM 307 - INDEPEDENT STUDY (double module) A named tutor
Agreed dates in Years 2/3

This is a double module version of CHM206, which is intended to allow you to research and complete an extended piece of analysis on a self chosen topic. You will be expected to sound this out carefully with your tutor. Usually you will agree on the topic and start in year 2 and continue into year 3, finally submitting your work at an agreed time in the final year of the degree. The completed work will usually be a 8,000 word dissertation. Close collaboration with your chosen support tutor will be essential on this module.
