BA (Hons) with QTS in Primary Education (Three Year Degree) Religious Education
This new pathway is designed for trainees who have an interest in Religious Studies
and who are looking to qualify as teachers with a subject specialism in Religious Education.
It will suit those who want a faster route into teaching whilst retaining some degree of subject
specialism. This degree is available at Carlisle.
Religious Education is a part of the basic curriculum and there has to be provision for RE in all schools.
This course offers a balanced approach
in terms of understanding Christian traditions as well as some of the other principal
religions in the world today - a balance which reflects syllabus requirements for teaching RE in schools.

FORMS OF RELIGION & HINDUISM (two half modules) |
Forms of Religion introduces students to the dimensions of religion which is particularly relevant for trainee teachers working with a local agreed syllabus for RE. This half module also looks at key concepts in six world religions and highlights the historical links between traditions. The half module on Hinduism provides an overview of the development of the Hindu tradition and introduces the scriptures, key teachings and practices.

JUDAISM & CHRISTIANITY (two half modules) |
The half module on Judaism looks at the Hebrew Bible, key festivals and symbols, the Holocaust and Judaism in the modern world. The half module on Christianity introduces students to Jesus and his background, the teachings/authority of the NT, key beliefs/practices in the different denominations and the Christian calendar and aspects of worship.

ISLAM: BELIEFS AND VALUES |
This module covers the sources and traditions of Islam. The life of Muhammad and the key events in the history of Islam will be explored. The Qur'an is explored, along with the sayings of Muhammad, and Shari'a law. In addition, the major traditions of Islam are explained and notable practices, such as the Five Pillars, the pattern of the Muslim year, and traditions of Muslim education. There is also some explanation of key issues in Muslim theology.

ESSENTIALS OF BUDDHISM |
This module looks at the origins and developments of Buddhism. It introduces students to the Three Jewels, The Buddha, The Dharma, the Sangha, the Eighfold Path, religious practice including Meditation and Karma and Causality.

MISSION, CONVERSION & DIALOGUE |
This module explores attitudes to mission and dialogue between the world's religions, with particular reference to the relations between Christianity and other religions. Attention is drawn to the different agendas held by different religions, and the extent to which people can learn from religious traditions other than their own. The responses of those engaged in inter-religious dialogue will be examined. Points of comparison and recurrent tension are identified.

BECOMING A SUBJECT LEADER IN RE |
This module prepares trainees for the role of the subject leader. Trainees will learn to work effectively with an agreed syllabus for RE and plan for teaching, learning and assessment across KS1 and KS2, ensuring continuity and progression. They will also consider the challenges facing the subject leader in working with non-specialists in their subject.

SPECIAL STUDY/INDEPENDENT STUDY (double module) |
In this module trainees develop skills in research, problem solving and independent study while working on an aspect of their subject specialism that relates directly to their experience in RE in schools or some aspect of pupils' learning in RE.
