RST 104 CHRISTIANITY & JUDAISM

The task of Christian theology, the person of Christ, redemption, the Trinity, creation and escatology. The origins of Islam and the life of Mohamed, the Quran, Muslim law and theology.


RST 112 CHRISTIANITY & JUDAISM

Jesus and his background, New Testament and scriptural authority, the Christian calendar and worship. The Hebrew Bible, festivals, Jewish customs and symbols, Judaism in the modern world.


RET 201 THE SCOPE OF CHRISTIAN ETHICS

Diversity in Christian moral judgements; the sources of Christian morality, the Bible, church and community; reason and ethics; popits of contention in Christian ethics; arenas for making moral judgements.


RST 205 CLASSICAL & MEDIEVAL THEOLOGY

The nature and origin of Christianity, the development of the doctrines of the Trinity, Grace and Sin, Truth, Beauty etc. and the end of Christianity.


RST 206 HEBREW BIBLE

The Hebrew Bible and Israelite history, the book of Genesis, The prophet Amos, its background and social morality. The book of Job, its litary forms, structure and contents and its ancient Near Eastern parallels.


RST 230 INDEPENDENT STUDY

A topic in the study of theology, Christian practice or theologically relevant questions in a related academic discipline.


RST 247 EXPLORING RELIGIOUS PHENOMENA

Historical and contemporary features of religious belief in Cumbria and Lancashire; chosen areas for special study in the region. Student negotiated topics and research tasks define the content for each participtant.


RST 248 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION

World views, arguments for the existence of God, Atheism, religion and science, the soul and life after death, revelation free will and predestination.


RST 263 JESUS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Sources and methods of analysis, the synoptic Gospels, parables of the Kingdom, the Passion and Resurrection, the 'Messianic secret' and the titles of Jesus. Jesus in the four Gospels. The apostolic proclamation Acts and the Cross and Resurrection in theology of Paul.


RST 270 CHURCH & SACRAMENTAL THEOLOGY

Worship and its relevance to the mission and identity of the Christian community, ecumenical ecclesiology and theology, the development of sacramental theology and contemporary developments in ritual sacraments.


RST 301 FUNDAMENTALISM

Fundamentalism and modernity, US and Christian fundamentalism, Pentecostalism and Neo- Pentecostalism, Jewish fundamentalism, Islamic Fundamentalism in Egypt and Iran, Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh movements.


RST 320 INDEPENDENT STUDY

A topic in the study of theology, Christian practice or theologically relevant questions in a related academic discipline.


RST 321 DOUBLE MODULE DISSERTATION

Introduction to topic choice, planning and research, a review of methods of critical analysis, interpreting different forms of theological expression and faith based practice, using primary and secondary sources and the correct deployment of evidence and contextual considerations.


RST 323 MISSION, CONVERSION & DIALOGUE

Biblical responses to religious pluralism; Religious pluralism in the history of the church, anti Semitism, relativising of religion, the WCC dialogue, Jewish vies of Christianity, Hinduism and Christianity, Hindu nationalism and toleration, Turks Infidels and Islam through the crusades, contemporary Islam and Christianity.


RST 324 MODERN THEOLOGY

An introduction to modernity, the rise of the secular, liberal theology, truth and the loss of God. The response to modernity; neo orthodoxy, Roman Catholic, evangelical, liberation and feminist theology; theology and the post modern.


RST 364 THE BIBLE IN THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST

Israel and the ancient Near East, the Patriarchs, myths from Mesopotamia; the flood and creation, Ugarit myths, language and culture, iconography and material culture, Law codes, covenants and treaties; Kingship, Wisdom and Prophecy in the ancient Near East.


RST 365 BIBLE IN THE MODERN WORLD

Historic and critical methods, aims, limitations and possibilities: the bible as text; the Bible and the reader, reader-response criticism, feminist interpretations, the Bible in Asia and native America; the Bible in literature and art.


RST 368 POST SECULAR THEOLOGY

The rupture of the modern; the post modern; autonomy and nihilism, Nouvelle Theologie, the Yale school; the post secular, radical orthodoxy, the return of Aquinas; the future for Christianty.


RST 369 PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION

Traditions on the psychology of religion, biological, psychoanalytical and descriptive / humanistic; religious experience, faith and knowledge; analogies of religious knowing, self-knowledge and the knowledge of God; Interpreting experience in prayer; trans-personal psychology, altered states of consciousness and the contemporary Christian response.


RST 371 JESUS CHRIST IN MODERN THOUGHT

Developments in modern Christology, the key stages in historical Christology, contemporary developments, especially, feminist and liberation Christologies, critical theological issues in Christology.
