Abstract:

All teachers are teachers of reading. While recall is important, there are other significant levels of reading comprehension. Thomas C. Barrett's taxonomy of reading comprehension includes: (1) literal comprehension; (2) inferential comprehension; (3) evaluation; (4) appreciation. Barrett's taxonomy of reading comprehension could be a useful and straightforward but sophisticated tool for teachers to use in helping pupils discover the relevance and significance of the message.
