- Shabbat Origins
By Amy J. Kramer, this discussion includes Biblical sources for and explanations of the Sabbath, and in respect of the 39 categories of work forbidden during this period an explanation of the concept of 'work' or 'creative efforts' employed here. In addition, Kramer discusses other aspects of the Shabbat under the headings of 'Religious Meaning', 'Laws and Customs', and 'Family Fun' available as links on this page.
- Shabbat (Sabbath)
Described as a 'bride' or 'queen' the Shabbat is noted to be the only ritual observance established by the Ten Commandments; it is also the most important of days. Shabbat is said to include two interrelated commandments: to remember (zachor) Shabbat, and to observe (shamor) Shabbat, which are discussed separately. Following these sections is a description of a typical Shabbat and a recipe for 'cholent', a traditional Shabbat dish. The 39 categories of acts forbidden on Shabbat are listed.
