It is made clear here that to translate Kami as 'god' or 'gods' is profoundly misleading. Kami does not carry the absolutist connotation of the god of the Judeo-Christian traditions. Kami rather refers to anything that possesses the quality of excellence or inspires awe; the mountains, the wind, the rain, rivers, the sea & so forth.
