    Shinto is regarded as the indigenous religion of Japan. It is here noted that throughout Japanese history Shinto has combined with other worldviews & religions, but what has remained constant is its belief in Kami, "divinities". This is the subject of this article.

    It is made clear here that to translate Kami as 'god' or 'gods' is profoundly misleading. Kami does not carry the absolutist connotation of the god of the Judeo-Christian traditions. Kami rather refers to anything that possesses the quality of excellence or inspires awe; the mountains, the wind, the rain, rivers, the sea & so forth.
